Hospitality Meets Security: Preparing for Imminent HMRC Reform

With big changes to employment regulations in the UK’s private security sector coming into effect, Westminster Business Council, alongside our partners, delivered the “Hospitality Meets Security” workshop last month to help hospitality leaders navigate the regulatory landscape.

The motivation was clear: starting 1 August 2025, HMRC will begin enforcing new employment standards for the security industry. These changes mandate the use of PAYE models across the board, eliminating long-standing practices of self-employment and cash-in-hand arrangements. With potential penalties ranging from financial sanctions to public naming and shaming, the risks to hospitality businesses are too high to ignore.

Our goal was to prepare the hospitality sector, particularly those operating in nightlife, events, and venues, for these imminent reforms. Many hospitality businesses outsource their security needs, often unaware of how their suppliers structure employment or pay. This workshop served to close that knowledge gap, offering actionable guidance on how to vet suppliers, maintain compliance, and avoid reputational and legal fallout.
